William 111 shilling

Postby CliffB » 10 August 2016

Hi all, this was my first old coin i found metal detecting, a lovely King William 111, Silver Shilling 1697, minted in York (y) a little worn, but is a great find in this condition, i had a coin specialist look at it and he was intrigued by it, because it had the London Legend on it, even when it was minted in York, don't really know what he meant by that?

Nice one, did some research.

From the reign of William III & Mary II House of Stuart.

There are six different obverse and only one reverse issued for the shilling of William III reign. However obverse two is exceedingly rare and is believed to be unique it could possibly be a pattern.

Some however have different issue marks in angles on the reverses. Roses in angles - silver from West of England mines. Plumes in angles or below bust - silver from Welsh mines.

Due to the "Great Recoinage" during William III reign,
hammered silver coins were to be withdrawn and replaced with
milled coins instead. A lot of the coins were minted at local
mints until 1698 to produce the large quantities required.
They have letters below the bust: B= Bristol, C=Chester,
E= Exeter, N= Norwich & Y= York.
